I recently conducted an interview with Joan Didion. We spoke over the phone; she from her hotel in Washington. She was on tour for Blue Nights, a reminisence about the life and death of her daughter, Quintana, and Didion’s thoughts about her own mortality. Over the next few weeks, we will be posting highlights from this interview, then it will all be posted on The Believer website.

THE BELIEVER: When you were a little girl you wanted to be an actress, not a writer?
JOAN DIDION: Right.
…
“’Blue Nights’ is precisely the thrill of those last two minutes in the air: the surge of expectation that comes as the wing flaps drop, the air brakes rise and the plane grinds forward, rocking gently, back and forth, over the water. It’s a book within a hairsbreadth of the landing strip, and its excitement comes from watching one of the greatest careers in modern letters make its final, unsettled preparations to touch down.”
—Nathan Heller, The New York Times
In this extended short film excerpt, directed by Griffin Dunne, Joan Didion reads from the second chapter of her memoir, Blue Nights.
